Student Summer Jobs

The National Records of Scotland is advertising for third- or fourth-year law-students to work there on a summer placement. Over decades law students – particularly those interested in legal history – have found these worthwhile summer jobs

The job description is as follows:

STUDENT PLACEMENT JOB DESCRIPTION

  1. To evaluate modern Sheriff Court civil records and following pre-prepared guidance select those records of legal and historical interest for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.2.
  2. To dispose of those records not selected for permanent preservation.
  3. To catalogue those records selected for permanent preservation using databases and/or bespoke cataloguing system (CALM).
  4. Any other suitable tasks as required by Court, Legal and Private Records Branch curatorial staff.

SUMMER STUDENT PLACEMENTS

Applications are invited from third and fourth year law students for up to five posts, to work on the selection of modern sheriff court processes of legal and historical interest for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland. There may also be the opportunity of working on other classes of civil and criminal records as part of a small and friendly team responsible for court and legal records in NRS. A Higher Grade certificate in history, or a history degree, or a demonstrable interest in the legal and general history of Scotland, would be an advantage. Since the work involves electronic listing of records, basic computer experience and keyboard skills are highly desirable. Any necessary training will be given.

The period of employment will be 12 weeks, from Monday 13 June to Friday 2 September 2016, working a five-day week of 37 hours (8.30am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am-4.30pm Friday) with leave entitlement, at a salary equivalent to £16,842 per annum. The job will be based at Thomas Thomson House, Sighthill, Edinburgh, which can be reached by regular train services to Edinburgh Park Station, and by several bus routes. There is an office car park.
